In 1963 a group of parents bringing up intellectually disabled children protested publicly against refusing their children the constitutional right to education. For 28 years the parents movements has successfully served the intellectually disabled within the scheme of The Children's Friend's Association, as the Committee and the Circle for Helping Children Requiring Special Care. The circle in Szczecin was established in 1964. In July 1991 it was registered under the name of The Polish Association for the Benefit of the Intellectually Disabled. As sector of all-Polish organization, the circle in Szczecin possesses the legal status.
